YOU TRIED EVERYTHING
Every crisis is a calling.
YOU’RE STILL STUCK.
The depression. The burnout. The anxiety. The lack of energy and direction. The feeling that something is off but you can't name what it is. It can linger for weeks, months, even years.
And we treat the symptoms as the problem.
But they're not the problem.
They're the message.
Something is ending.
But you don't know what comes next.
The career that built you no longer fits. Or the relationship. Or the version of yourself you spent twenty years maintaining, quietly, while something more honest waited beneath the surface.
You've tried to think your way through it. You've optimised, planned, researched. And still the feeling persists — underneath everything — that the real work hasn't started yet.
Maybe you've achieved what you aimed for and feel more lost than before. Maybe a quiet voice has been getting louder for years, and you've learned to call it anxiety, depression, burnout. You've treated it as a problem. But what if it wasn't a problem?
These aren't crises to fix. They are thresholds to cross. And the question underneath all of them — the one this work begins from — is the same:
What is this asking of me?
What if it was a message?
"Is your fear of staying stuck
growing stronger than your fear
of the unknown?"
What is
The Soul of Change
Not a self-help system. Not a therapy model. Not an optimisation framework.
The Soul of Change is a map of transformation — drawn from depth psychology, indigenous rites of initiation, Jungian psychology, and the patterns that emerge when human beings are honest about what it costs to become who they actually are.
It was synthesised from ancient initiation frameworks — van Gennep, Campbell, Eliade, Turner, Jung, and Shamanic tradition — and tested against the full range of major life transitions: burnout, depression, anxiety, midlife, grief, career endings, becoming a parent, the slow dissolution of a life built on someone else's expectations.
The Soul of Change model is a map. And the first thing a good map does is show you where you already are.
In every crisis, there's a calling.
FIRST PRINCIPLES
Suffering is a Signal. It is the soul's first attempt to get your attention.
The Unknown is a Door. The familiar that no longer fits is.
Meaning is the Medicine. Before you can cross the threshold, you need to understand what you're crossing from.
Crisis is the Calling. It is the soul's insistence, and it will find another way through if you refuse this one.
Isolation is the Wound. Not because you are weak. Because it has never been meant to be done alone.
What I offer
Weekly writing at the intersection of depth psychology, initiation, and what major life transitions are really asking. No noise. No optimisation. Just honest thinking at the edge of what the familiar can hold.
A closed, time-bound circle for the in-between — when something essential has ended and what comes next has not yet arrived. Not therapy. Not coaching. Not a program. A deliberate container where meaning is not forced and inner authority can be heard again.
Individual accompaniment through the crossings that ask the most of us. For those navigating a major life transition who need sustained, private depth. Three to six months. Application only.
Session duration: 1 hour

It’s your resistance to change
that is keeping you stuck, depressed or anxious.
But instead of asking yourself
how do I get better?
first ask yourself
What is keeping me stuck?
Who am I?
DAVID HOOGLAND · THRESHOLD KEEPER
This work
came from
the inside.
I spent twenty years building a career that wasn't mine.
Creative director. Agency founder. Owner of a gin brand. Successful, by most measures. And for a long time, those measures were enough to avoid the question that was growing underneath: Whose life am I really living?
In 2019, after I closed my business, I fell into a year long burnout, accompanied by a deep depression and anxiety. I felt like a failure. I was stuck, overwhelmed, lost any sense of direction and everything I tried drained my energy. Nothing I did made any sense.
They were the soul's first attempts to get my attention. The Soul of Change is what I built from eight years of learning what they were trying to say.
I work as a Threshold Keeper — not as someone who has completed the journey, but as one who has learned to remain present within it. I accompany people through the loss of false orientation without replacing it with a new one.
It's what I was always moving toward, underneath every role I carried.
Every challenge we face is an invitation to connect with our truth.
Every crisis carries within it the seed of a calling.
True transformation reveals strength, purpose, and the light that was already within you.

Maybe you’re going through a burnout or depression.
Or you keep feeling an anxiousness that just won’t leave you.Maybe you feel stuck in a job that doesn’t feel as aligned as it used to, sensing there’s something more,
something else that’s calling you.Or perhaps your relationship feels stagnant
disconnected, misaligned, lonely,
even if nothing is “wrong” on the surface.Life brings us to these thresholds.
Moments that feel too heavy, too complex, unknown,
and too uncertain to move through alone.Big life changes ask for more than strategy.
They ask for community
someone who can witness you, hold space for you, and help you find your footing as you feel things you’ve never felt before
and face steps you never took before.Transformation isn’t something you plan your way through.
It’s an unpredictable crossing.
There are blind spots.
There are initiations.
There are questions only you can answer. One of them is this:
Is your fear of staying stuck growing stronger than your fear of the unknown?
Are you getting tired of being depressed, of surviving? If that question stirs something in you
if it feels like a mirror held up to your momentthen I’m here for you.

The Soul of Change is a model that I use to help you navigate the challenges of life and the change you are facing.
It empowers and encourages you to trust that all your struggles hold meaning and can become a doorway to growth, wisdom, and transformation.
-
The strength of the Soul of Change lies in its simplicity. It’s not a tool for control but a guide to awareness.
In a world that teaches us to prioritize control and stability as the path to happiness, we often find that clinging to them during life’s inevitable challenges only deepens our suffering. Obstacles are an unavoidable part of life, and navigating them requires the courage to let go of control. This is the discomfort where we find growth and maturity.
The Soul of Change offers a framework for finding guidance—whether from within or through others—helping you face life’s struggles with awareness, trust, and connection. It transforms your suffering into a pathway toward growth, wisdom, and personal transformation.

The 4 GATES
of the SHADOW
What if the parts of you that feel most difficult—your rage, shame, fear, or control—weren’t mistakes to fix, but doorways to your deeper power?
The 4 Gates of the Shadow is a new framework being developed within the Soul of Change, one that brings structure, language, and compassion to the hidden territories we often avoid. These are not just personal shadows, but also collective wounds passed down through culture, family, and time.
This model invites you into a courageous inner journey through four key thresholds:
The Wound — where we meet the origin of our pain, the false beliefs we carry, and the triggers that still haunt us.
The Defense — where we uncover the masks we wear and the subtle ways we manipulate reality to stay safe.
The Self — where we confront the split between the Lower Self (our reactive patterns) and the Higher Self (our soul potential).
The Transformation — where we begin to embody the gold hidden in the dark, integrating our shadow into soulful, responsible action.
Why does this matter?
Because avoiding our shadow is what keeps us stuck, personally, relationally, and collectively. And in a time of global upheaval, political polarization, and ecological collapse, doing our inner work is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessity. The 4 Gates offer a clear, grounded, and mythically resonant process to help you meet the shadow not as an enemy, but as a teacher.
This is just the beginning.
The full framework will be published soon as part of The Soul Atlas, an upcoming guidebook to transformation through the Soul of Change. For now, know that this work is on its way.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re standing at a threshold, sensing that something deeper is calling,
this is your invitation to enter.
You don’t need certainty to take your next step.
You need someone to witness you in your new becoming, and someone who’s there when you feel you’re falling.
I guide people through life’s most uncertain seasons—when the old map no longer fits, and the new one hasn’t yet appeared.
Anxiety feeds on not-knowing. But it’s our resistance to change, our refusal to enter the unknown, that creates our suffering.
Through the Soul of Change model—rooted in depth psychology, mythology, and lived experience—I help you navigate this threshold with honesty, curiosity, and courage.
I offer hope in despair.
Meaning in confusion.
Trust when the path disappears.
You’re not lost—your soul is calling.
Together, we can start to listen.
I invite you to meet life not with control,
but with trust.
To see your struggles not as failures,
but as invitations.
Because transformation doesn’t begin
with having the answers.
It begins with learning
how to be present in the questions.
To resist change, is to resist your nature.
